| Barry,
the legendary Saint Bernard dog that between 1800 and 1814, saved
the lives of 40 people, lost or trapped in the Swiss Alps (St. Bernard
Pass). Legend has it that Barry died on a rescue mission, at the
hands of a lost soldier who, in the mistaken belief that the animal
coming to his rescue was going to attack him, wounded it fatally
with his bayonet.
In fact, Barry died peacefully in the monastery in 1814, at 14 years
of age. A replica of his remains are in the Natural History Museum
of Berne (Switzerland).
